The ascent to the ski region of Zinal is one of the steepest wood ascensions of the Tour. The path, which forks to the left, is less steep, but a bit longer. As we reach the timber line, the path gets flatter and the first sun rays air the sweaty backs of the hikers. Alongside the funicular, we hike most of the way over ski slopes, up toward the Corne Sorboi (With the length of the stage in mind, we can of course overcome the first part with the funicular). On the peak, we enjoy a wonderful panoramic view.
In serpentines, we go down to Moiry, a green-blue glowing reservoir, where a small restaurant invites us to rest. The small hut above the reservoir can be used for a overnight stay. |

We cross the reservoir and hike, on a good path, into the opposing valley. The destination is the barren Col de Torrent. On the way, whistling colonies of marmots hide in their burrows and, every few steps, small mountain lakes shimmer . The Pigne d’Arolle and the Veisivi dazzle the hiker with their splendor. On the following descent the Ehringer cows let the hiker pass, unfazed. Soon we encounter the Fahr street, which we follow to Les Hauderes. Sunburned houses, ornated with flowers, welcome the hiker. From Les Hauderes we preferably take the postal car and enjoy the ride. The way to Arolla isn't very spectacular and seems long. In Arolla the setting sun bathes the huge flank of the Mont Collion in reddish light, more beautiful than any painting. |
